Gas supply lines are vulnerable to gas leaks where they rise to meet metering systems. HaloValve offers technology to instantly protect against leakage.
Throughout the United States, natural gas supply lines are open to the environment where they connect to the metering system. This leaves them susceptible to breakage from a variety of causes. And when a gas line breaks, it can cause catastrophic gas leaks.
Gas meters and exposed gas lines, if they are protected at all, generally have a steel or concrete bollard system. It’s a simple barricade arrangement, which actually only provides nominal protection from the five major causes of exposed gas pipeline leaks – vehicle impact, negligence, damaged bollards, settlement, acts of nature.
HaloValve | Natural Gas Breakaway Valve
Impact prevention systems offer, at best, a limited solution to gas line leak protection.
HaloValve is the only technology available for instant and effective protection from the common and dangerous occurrence of natural gas line breakage at the meter or farm-taps. HaloValve was developed by GTI®, an organization dedicated to a secure, abundant and affordable future for all energy markets, with generous funding support from Operations Technology Development (OTD).
HaloValve is a patented breakaway valve installed on the riser where most breaks occur. If a break occurs, the valve instantly seals the line until it can be repaired. This engineered “weak” spot makes certain the line break happens at the point where an instant seal will be formed.
Here’s how it works:
- The breakaway valve is installed into the gas meter set or other piping.
- If serious lateral force happens, the fitting breaks. (The design ensures the valve can withstand minor impacts.)
- The ball inside the valve acts as a plug, stopping the escape of natural gas immediately. Stopping this flow minimizes the risks of fire, explosion, property damage, and serious injury.
